A
Conversation with Edith Head
Benefit for the Chicago Historical Society brings Oscar-winning
costume designer to life
Tucson-based
actress and writer Susan Claassen is bringing her one-woman
show “A Conversation with Edith Head” to The Casino
in Chicago on March 6 2003, for a special
evening benefiting the Chicago Historical Society.
“A Conversation with Edith Head” is the brainchild
of Susan Claassen, actress and Managing Artistic Director
of Tucson’s Invisible Theatre. Susan first got the idea
to do the show watching a television biography about the
legendary designer in which she noticed her own striking
physical resemblance to Edith Head. Claassen wrote the show,
with Paddy Calistro, the Los Angeles author of Edith Head’s
Hollywood (E.P. Dutton, Inc. 1983) and Tuscon director Carol
Calkins. Much of the dialogue came directly from 13 hours
of taped Edith Head interviews, acquired from Head’s estate.
“Edithisms”,
as Ms. Head referred to her own sayings, abound in the show.
Drawn from interviews with Bob Mackie, who once worked for
Head as a sketch artist, Edie Wasserman, wife of Universal
Studio head Lew Wasserman, and Art Linkletter, award winning
host of “House Party”, “Edithisms” provide
first-hand insights into the world of Hollywood glamour
and film stars.
A
