What are you doing this holiday season?

Most of us spend lots of time shopping for gifts for our loved ones, preparing and eating a scrumptious meal and traveling to the relatives for some holiday cheer. This year as every other holiday season brings in the spirit of giving. Most of us don't even consider that there are those who have nothing to give. We go the stores and buy lots of toys (for kids and adults!) and sometimes forget to think about the people who have no toys and no money. We drive to our favorite supermarkets and spend a lot of money for one holiday meal. The thought that there are thousands of people, in our community who will stand in line for a piece of turkey , somewhere nearby usually doesn't enter our minds.

Then there are those who volunteer there time helping others somewhere this holiday season. They might help at a soup kitchen, church, or give toys at the office for a Santa program and donate food to a local food pantry. People volunteer for many reasons. Perhaps, they want to help the less fortunate or teach their kids the true meaning of the holiday season. Once January has arrived, volunteering drops off and we go back to the way we were -however, feeling that we made a difference. Don't misunderstand me - we have made a difference. But homeless people are homeless year round. They are still hungry all of the year. Their homes are the streets, the shelters, and the viaducts year round. The fact is that most social service agencies need help throughout the year - not just during the holidays. "Need knows no season" -- The Salvation Army byline. Give and volunteer this holiday season. Please consider that your gift of time will be just as valuable the other days of the year.

Start your holiday season by giving the gift of your time. If you only have one day to give - give it. Know that whatever time you have to give, it is appreciated.

There are many social services agencies in the Chicagoland area. Below are a just a few of them and what they are looking for. We have chosen to list only a few opportunities available with these different agencies. Please call them for more information.
