Working at a soup kitchen, food pantry or food depository offers volunteers
the opportunity to impact the lives of individuals and families under
great stress due to transitional living. In 2 -3 hours, volunteers commonly
accomplish feats such as repackaging 1,000 meals to be donated to low-income
households or serving three hundred people dinner, ensuring that they
do not go hungry. Chicago Cares Volunteers are given a brief orientation
and then are eligible to volunteer in any of our programs. Some specific
Hunger volunteering opportunities include:
Serve a hot meal to more than 250 homeless Chicagoans. The Salvation Army
Thomas Sealy Center in Uptown provides meals and services for many of
Chicago's hungry and homeless individuals.
The Lincoln-Belmont pantry provides supplemental food to hundreds of families
and individuals each month. Volunteers register and interview families
and help them select food. Spanish is helpful but not required.
At the Living Room Café, which serves low-income children and adults from
the Woodlawn community, volunteers make and serve a hearty breakfast,
taking orders and serving guests as though they are in a café. Before
breakfast, instead of working in the kitchen, you can read books to the
children at the café.
Volunteers make a great dinner and serve it café style to the guests at
