Why Men Earn More By Warren Farrell,Ph.D.
According to the U.S.
Bureau of labor, women earn a mere 80 cents for every dollar men earn.
Why, forty years after the Federal Equal pay Act, do hard-working women
still get paid less than the guys on the job?
Warren Ferrell, Ph.D.,
has been an advocate for women's rights since the early 1970's. Throughout
his career as a counselor, trainer, and best-selling author, he has also
worked to improve communication between the sexes and increase understanding
of their differences. Now Dr. Ferrell confronts the emotionally charged
economically-crucial issue of what are the real reasons women earn less
than their male counterparts.
Why would bottom-line
driven companies pay men more than women for the same amount of work?
Perplexed by that question, Dr. Ferrell set out to find answers. Based
on years of exhaustive research, he came to the conclusion that women
pay an economic price for seeking more flexible, less risky, end more
fulfilling careers. In opther words, men make more money because they
are more likely to make personal sacrifices for the payoff of pay. After
factoring variables such as hours worked (men work about four hours more
a week) and uninterrupted experience (men average about an additional
year an a half in their current occupations), Dr. Ferrell discovered an
assumption-shattering fact: when their job responsibilities (not just
titles), experience and contributions are the same, men routinely earn
less than women.
“For
most people , the bad news is that the highway to high pay is often a
toll road,” notes Dr. Ferrell. “The good news is that what
is a toll road to one person may be nirvana to another.” Beyond
urging women to stop seeing them selves as victims of discrimination,
Why Men Earn More presents 25 concrete, measurable ways for any woman
to increase her pay if she is willing to make certain trade-offs.
They include:
• Choose a career with higher financial and emotional risks (i.e.
venture capitalist)
• Find a specialty that requires frequent updating-and stay current
• Seek more lucrative subfields (surgeon vs psychiatrist)
• Get hazard pay without the hazards (i.e. be an administrator in
the Air Force)
• Relocate-especially to undesirable locations at the company's
behest
• Require less job security
Dr. Ferrell looks
at discrimination in favor of women-in male dominated fields like construction;
in female-dominated fields like social work;and for women who have the
added advantage of beauty. Offering a frank look at the disappointed dreams
of the “have it all' era to the balanced realities of the “trade-offs”
era, this book opens doors to higher pay and more rewarding work for both
sexes.
Dr. Ferrell, is
the author of several books on gender issues, including the award-winning
bestsellers, Why Men Are The Way They Are and The Myth of Male Power.
Married with two grown daughters, he runs his own business in Carlsbad,
California.
